Recreation or Re-creation

This is my first posting in the Musings blog so I thought I'd take on a semi-serious topic.

I have just returned from my vacation. I took two weeks and did a "Stay-cation". In other words, while I was on vacation, I actually stayed at home for two weeks. Now that's not to say that I just stayed home and did nothing. I went to a Giants game (they lost!). I went to the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose and the Exploritorium here in the city. I also took several walks around the town and went to dinner with friends. All in all, a nice vacation.

I brings this us not to dazzle you with my exploits on vacation but to call your attention to re-creation.

We often think of vacation as recreation time, and so it is. A time to rest, relax, and do some things you wouldn't or couldn't do during regular work time. Recreation is good for you.

But I want to call your attention to the process of re-creation. We can re-create ourselves in many ways. Recreation is one of them. It is a time to rest and rejuvenate so that you can go back to work refreshed. But re-creation can come at any time, not just on your vacation. Re-creation is the process of re-doing, re-working, re-refreshing your life. It can be (and should be) done every day of your life. It is done through prayer, service, reconciliation, putting your life in the hands of God. Only in this way will you be able to do God's will and work throughout your life.

And to do these things, you don't need a vacation.
